Another busy week last week for the team here at SCRFU.

It has been great that we have been receiving your feedback regarding our weekly newsletter, we appreciate the support and if there is anything that you would like for us to include, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

South Canterbury Rugby Green and Black Supporters Club AGM:

Thursday 16th of March, the Green & Black Supporters Club held their AGM. While there were several apologies there was still a good attendance.

Points that were discussed but not limited to included how do we grow our membership base and increase our supporters merchandise offer. It was agreed that both organisations will work together to implement some new strategies to grow and develop our supporter base.

There was excitement that the Fraser Park Development had commenced, and the board and members are looking forward to next year when we can once again be having games at the park.

Like last year the Board committed funding to sponsorship of the men’s Heartland Team and will be offering a meal after each Thursday night practices during the representative season to the teams training at Pleasant Point. For this SCRFU sincerely thank the Green and Black’s.

Alpine Energy:

On Thursday, Tristram and I attended the Sponsorship awards held by the team of Alpine Energy. These awards are given out by Alpine Energy as a way of them thanking all the community groups that they have supported over the past 12 months. We here at SCRFU are very grateful for the support that Alpine give us, as it has enabled us to grow and implement our Safe Spaces initiative.

We look forward to continuing to work with Alpine Energy and on behalf of SCRFU and all the other community groups that you support a massive thank you from all of us.

Aoraki Māori Rugby AGM:

Both Tristram and I had the privilege of attending the Aoraki Māori Rugby AGM on Saturday the 18th. We took out of the meeting some new insights and our goal is to work at implementing closer connections. Congratulations to the new chair, Hamiora Goldsmith and deputy chair Aaron Gregan on being elected at the meeting into these roles. Also, to Erica Peeti who has come on board and will represent Aoraki Māori on the SCRFU’s Open Grade Committee.

Club Season:

Just a friendly reminder that our Club season kicks off on Saturday 1st of April. Book in this day and please come along and support your Club across of the grades. We at SCRFU are excited that the Club season is about to get underway, and we know that all the players, coaches, managers, and volunteers have been putting in hard mahi to be ready.

Ranfurly Shield:

Please see a press release done by the WRFU regarding our shield challenge.

Wellington Lions to defend the Ranfurly Shield in two confirmed pre-season fixtures

Wellington Rugby Football Union has today confirmed Horowhenua-Kapiti and South Canterbury as the two Bunnings Warehouse Heartland Championship Unions to challenge for the Ranfurly Shield during the provincial pre-season.

As Meads Cup Champions in 2022, South Canterbury automatically earned themselves a challenge for a second consecutive year, while Wellington’s provincial neighbours Horowhenua-Kapiti, were selected as the other challenger.

Shannon Paku, Wellington Rugby Football Union Chief Executive Officer, said both pre-season challenges would be worthy occasions for the famous Log o’Wood.

“It’s fantastic to be taking the Ranfurly Shield to Levin, not only for them to host a Shield Challenge, it’s also great to be able to have the opportunity to defend it against our close neighbours.

“If we are successful in defending the Shield against Horowhenua-Kapiti, we know we’ll have a tough task ahead with South Canterbury.”

The Wellington Lions won the Log o’ Wood off Hawke’s Bay late last season, before successfully defending it a week later against Waikato, which saw them lock it away the summer.

Horowhenua-Kapiti will get the first chance to challenge for the Shield on Wednesday, July 12th at the Levin Domain.

Corey Kennett, Chief Executive Officer of Horowhenua-Kapiti Rugby Football Union, said he was thrilled to host a Shield challenge in the district.

“Horowhenua-Kapiti Rugby Football Union is incredibly thankful to WRFU for granting us a Ranfurly Shield challenge, and the fact that our Challenge is being held in Levin is awesome.

“The Ranfurly Shield, its history, its mana, and the prestige that it is held in, is still very much alive and strong in the Nua, so the opportunity for our players, management, supporters, and community, to be part of a Ranfurly Shield cis fantastic.

“Our rugby community has fond memories of a challenge we hosted 30 years ago. That was a massive event, and we think this challenge will be even bigger. We would like to pass on our sincere thanks and gratitude to Dave, Lisa and Paul from Mills-Albert as match day sponsors, for making this event possible,” said Kennett.

Wellington Lions Commercial Partner, Mills Albert Ltd, will be the Matchday Sponsor for this fixture.

“Being a business located in the Horowhenua-Kapiti area, we are beyond excited to support the Shield challenge in our own community. We can already visualise the attendance of whānau, supporters and players creating a memory that they will never forget,” said Lisa Mills-Albert, Corporate Services Manager.

If the Lions are successful in defending the Shield against Horowhenua-Kapiti, Meads Cup Champions South Canterbury will make the trip to Wellington for a challenge the following Wednesday (July 19th). Last year South Canterbury gave Hawke’s Bay a run for their money, going down 38-20.

Tim Hyde-Smith, Chief Executive Officer of South Canterbury Rugby, said: “South Canterbury Rugby Union are excited once again to be in the position to challenge for one of New Zealand’s most historical and prestige sporting memorabilia, the Ranfurly Shield.

“The team can't wait to head to our nation’s Capital to take on the Wellington Lions. Interest is already starting to build and along with the players, our coaching and management support staff, life members, board, supporters club, our rugby clubs and schools, our wider community are looking forward to the match.

“It is going to be a wonderful experience and we look forward to being hosted by Wellington Rugby Football Union.”

More details, including kick-off times and ticketing information, will be announced by Wellington Rugby Football Union in the coming months.

The week that was and the week ahead

Harlies women are on fire with 10 keen ladies turning up for training last Thursday night. The numbers are growing and so is the interest, great to see the ladies down training with the senior men.

The Geraldine Wahine are busy preparing for their season also with Jason Hurley coaching them again. They have a strong squad of 25/27 players, they are preparing to enter the Chch competition again this season playing 15 aside. Their season kicks off on the 15th of April.

Secondary School Steering Group

Time to connect with our SS Coaches and Managers to discus how we can grow and improve our competition giving our SSG the best experience. Gala Night is on the 10th of May with the season kicking off the week after on the 17th of May.

Mackenzie Rugby Committee

Thanks to the Mackenzie rugby club for inviting myself along to their meeting. Great to see 15 keen committee members meeting on a wet Monday night. Mackenzie RFC were fantastic at supporting our Heartland Womens festival last year and we look forward to them hosting another HL festival again this year. The Secondary School Girls have a game forecast at the Mackenzie club on the 28th of June, Geraldine vs Roncalli – both teams have players from Mackenzie College playing for them. This is a great opportunity for the local girls to play in their home town. Great to see a passionate country club ready to grow and support their regions players.

Todd Mudie Holiday Programme

Reminder to clubs to advertise for your Holiday Programme – see poster and link for your players to register at their respective club.

Waimate High School

Dean and I are heading down to Waimate this Wednesday to deliver Rugby skills and drills sessions to any keen players for 2023. Safe Spaces South Canterbury

With support from Alpine Energy, in 2023 Safe Spaces South Canterbury is ramping up. Clubs will be receiving check lists that they can work through and gain rewards. Most of these check list items are around keeping people safe and continuing to create great environments for people to grow. We also have club signs for anyone from the public or community to let us know if they see or hear anything that not safe. These signs will be promoted on game days and other events around clubs.

I really enjoyed my first week with SCRFU. Very welcoming and supporting team!

Attended a Rugby Smart session led by Andy at the Harlequins clubrooms – Very worthwhile.

Looking forward to attending the Rugby Smart session at Point Monday 20th of March.

I was very impressed as well with the development and progress our boys made at the Teenage Series. The boys worked on the phase of taking the ball into contact. We will be continuing with that this Tuesday and work towards defence.

“In order to learn we must understand.”- Breaking down the skill and helping the youth understand each step will enable them to learn the skill to their full.

We are also looking forward to the TEENAGE TACKLE TENS afternoon coming up on the 5th of April – Action rugby with a free BBQ afterwards.

I am excited to work along a strong team at SCRFU, helping create a positive rugby environment for the youth of South Canterbury.

Feel free to email me
